There are animals that sing, some that dance, and others that accomplish astonishing feats of architecture. But do they also possess imagination and creativity? Or are they simply acting out innate patterns of behavior? Could it be that the roots of our own artistic expression reach far back into the animal kingdom? And if so, what do animals gain from it?

More often than not, dance, song, and architecture become arts of seduction—and in evolutionary terms, they pay off. Human art, however, has long since outgrown its purely biological functions. Yet its earliest roots can already be found in the animal world. After all, art did not simply fall from the sky.
